For those of you who know Langley- this will come as no surprise. She had a Blast at the "My Little Pony" Show my parents and sister took her to. She is also way excited about the Backyardigans show this weekend. I am glad she likes plays- with us as parents and all.
On a similar note we took her to rehearsal the other night- I am in the show, Jamie is directing. Anyway no sitter- we thought no problem she will play on the computer all night. Eek- can't get the My Little Pony or Nick Jr. websites to respond (either the computer or the wireless signal in the theatre). She spent all night running up and climbing on the stage announcing almost every time, "I Want to be On-Stage." Ahh... just like her parents.

Langley has a Pony. We are fortunate enough to have a great family. My aunt and uncle have a farm and have "given" Langley a pony. Meaning they keep it feed it and do everything else while we get to reap the benefits of letting Langley "have" a pony. Langley's cousins (My aunt's and uncle's grandchildren) picked out a great one for her. She is Lolly and she is so sweet. The other kids have ponies too- and they are all awesome. I am so excited that we have a horse crazy girl and horses to play with. Anyway here are a couple pictures of Pappy Eddie, Langley and Lolly.

Sorry for the fuzziness of the pictures- I used a tripod, but with no flash this is what I ended up with.

Our big Christmas tree- in our main floor sun room.

As you can see I kinda have an ornament fetish- doesn't look like a bunch of room to spare- but believe me I could fit many more on there. (I have good genes for it- just look in the archives at my parents tree last year in January 2007). It is so nice to have a 7 1/2 foot regular instead of the 6 foot slimline we had in the apartment.

Langley's tree- I have started her early on ornament collecting!

Here is our basement family room tree- it has ornaments from china on it- cloisonne, Chinese zodiac animals, lanterns and a few miscellaneous ones- we had a bid lantern on top of it- but it kept falling off- so I stuck a bow that Jamie got on a bottle of Champagne from a student. (Yes the bow was bigger than the bottle).

OK so I was reminded that I haven't posted in a while and I do promise to post pictures of our trees and Langley's Gingerbread house- I thought it was much more important to celebrate this milestone- Langley bought her first toy the other day. Yes she is already indoctrinated in American Consumerism- of the worst kind- My Little Pony- and from Walmart.
She bought it with the gift card she won for the costume contest (I didn't know what to do so the card has been hanging out in my wallet since October). But she has been sooo into the ponies recently- and she already has a (cough) bunch. But she really wanted Pinkie Pie- I mean really. So I thought it would be fun for her to buy it herself. And then before I could change my mind we went. At 9:30 at night, coat over pajamas, we went, snow on the ground. But she loved it. And it was worth it- and there was no crowd at Walmart.

A Little Side Yard Action

OK- Some of you may know this- but some may not. We are moving. To Indiana. We bought a House. We closed last week. Jamie got a job at Wabash College teaching theatre. I am super excited.
You all know how superstitious I am- so I couldn’t tell the world until I was sure I wouldn’t jinx it. Well, we closed on a house and I thought it was time to let you guys in. I love our new house- its cottagey-cape coddy and adorable- with a kick-ass yard.
We will officially move in at the first of August- although Jamie and my parents are going over to move the lawn and stuff like that. Here are a few pictures.

Referral Day Remembered

I don't think I have ever really written about our referral day. It was not one of my better days. But we recently received a letter from our Agency- basically admitting the were not the best on customer relations for a while (ahem), and that they promise to be better and here is the plan. It actually makes me maybe want to use them again- maybe. Bear in mind this was a day when they were actually nice to us. The letter brought back some other- not so pleasant memories as well.
So here is the deal. I knew referrals were coming in- I was on all the watchdog groups. People on my April Pandas board started receiving calls early in the morning of January 25, 2006. I knew that unless something unspeakable had happened we would get a call. No work got done, I stared at the phone- for hours, I couldn't eat lunch I was so nervous, I didn't want to go to the bathroom for fear I might miss the call.
I waited, and waited, and waited till I couldn't contain myself any more. Most of you know how impatient I am. As Langley says "Mommy waits fast." But I digress...
Finally about 3:00 I called. Yes the referrals came in. No one has called you? I am transferred to a woman- let me tell you that transfer time was the most agonising ever, I don't think I breathed. The lady picks up the line and tells me that I have a beautiful daughter. I remember she told me her birth date and she was from Chongqing (which I had never heard of) and that she was the "belle of the ball." So I immediately ask if I can see her picture- they tell me I need to hurry because it is late and they are closing soon. And the reason I had not been called earlier was that the China Coordinator was at a conference meeting thing that day. (Uh- and no one else can call? Do they not know that we all know the referrals should be there? Do they not know how stressful it is to "Not Know"?)
I call Jamie and we decide he will drive in and I will take the subway over- he can pick me up at the Metro parking lot. I call him from the train and we agree to meet at the Agency- because we don't think we can make it in time if he picks me up at the Metro parking lot (Traffic for him was awful).
So I decide to get a cab. Bad Idea. I had no cash- ah but here was a nice, if a bit pushy, cabbie offering to take me by an ATM. He looked normal. A nice dude from India. Let's just say that at this point I am so nerve racked, and half hyperventilating- will we make it there before they close- is my daughter OK- blah, blah, blah- that I get in the minivan? I call the agency for their street address- they will stay for us. OK. Take a deep breath. We drive to the ATM- I don't have my card- it hits me like a ton of bricks- I left it in my pocket yesterday. I tell the cabbie- he starts screaming at me. I don't know what to do. Jamie calls- I start to cry. The cabbie keeps yelling and saying things like why are you crying? I tell Jamie he's yelled at me. The cab driver says he isn't yelling at me- he is talking loudly to himself now he starts ranting about how I am this white girl who thinks she can get whatever she wants. I try to explain the situation to him- he couldn't care less. There is something said about how God is going to punish me and I will "get it" in the end. I really think he could go postal on me. I am petrified. But more importantly I am scared I will not see my daughter that day. I call the Agency to see if someone can lend me money- they can. OK- a little bit better.
So here I am in this minivan cab, with this man from India screaming at me and calling me a racist. I am sobbing and trying to explain I am not a racist and I am adopting a daughter from China- I have friends of different races- lots of them. I mean we live in DC for goodness sake. (Why did I need to justify myself to him? I don't know- but at the time it seemed like a good idea.) He continued to rant and rave and I continue to cry.
We finally arrive at the Agency. He makes me leave my purse in the van. I run upstairs to see if anyone will lend me cab fare money-I will write you a check right now- THEY HAD TO DISCUSS IT- like it was something they couldn't do, like I hadn't already called about it. It was twelve dollars!- with tip!- and I left a good tip you know for Karma's sake, so I wouldn't end up in Hell (as if this man could decide my eternal fate). The office lady pays him so I don't have to see him again- but alas- I have left my purse in the van and have to scurry to retrieve it. The Joy! The lady who paid the money said there was a psych place in the building and he probably thought I was crazy and would skip out on the payment.
I am still crying uncontrollably, nerves?, joy?, exhaustion from not knowing?, and I have beaten Jamie to the office. So they lend me the key to the hallway bathroom and I try to pull myself together. I remember someone telling me to forget everything bad because I don't want to ruin my referral day. Uhm- OK, that's possible. It is just barely before closing time when I go in to the bathroom- when I leave the bathroom pretty much everyone in the office is gone. I meet Jamie in the hallway on my way back into the office.
We did manage to get us a very nice lady to show us our referral. Of Course she was someone I had never seen before and would never see again. Nothing like continuity.
Our daughter was beautiful. It was all surreal- like this weird dream. I actually remember more about the cab ride that the office visit. I remember she had this little scar on her face and how I wondered if she had scratched herself with a fingernail. I remember Jamie saying how we need to get a doctor to look at her medical records- but that he could see no reason that we wouldn't accept the referral. Most of all I remember just staring at her beautiful picture.

On February 3rd we went to the Families with Children From China, Maryland Branch (FCC) Chinese New Year Party. It was a blast (once Langley warmed up). She loved all the acrobats and Chinese Opera, Kung Foo, and Lion Dance. Anything that was onstage she loved- ah- little theatre girl in training. Most of our travel group was there and we met a bunch of great people. Langley was so tired at the end she fell asleep before we got to the interstate.

About the Lion Dance- you feed him red envelopes (supposedly filled with money- but ours was empty) and later he throws up- some kind of vegetable- think they used lettuce. If you get hit by the "throw up" I think its good luck. Anyway for the past two weeks Langley has been going around saying, "Lion- Mess." And we know exactly what she is talking about. Its hysterical. She has also taken her stuffed Lion with her many, many places.

I haven’t posted in a while- you know the onslaught of holidays and traveling. But now we are back into our normal (abbynormal to some) life I have a little time to stop and share. I just want to say that nobody does Christmas like my family. From the moment you walk into my parent’s house you are inundated with it. Christmas trees in every room- wreaths, sleighs, snowmen- it is wonderful. Langley was in awe. Jamie had me get on my knees and look up at the big tree- it is REALLY BIG from Langley’s level. We had a great time, Santa came, and it was wonderful. By the way that picture does not do the tree justice- it is georgous. We also had a great time with Jamie’s family- but they don’t quite go to the wonderful extremes in decorating mine does, but the whole family was there and was fabulous. Nothing beats Christmas with a child.

Last weekend we went to a drive through light display. We have a great time and Langley was so amazed. She couldn't even talk- she was so mesmerized by the lights. We had a great Thanksgiving. Langley had a blast- she was completely well by the time we flew to Columbus. We had great fun staying with John and Julia- LOTS of toys for Langley to play with! Hello,
I know, I know, enough with the Halloween already. But I wanted to share the pictures we have taken a few weeks ago. So here they are, well some of them. Anyway she now “gets” Halloween. She says “Halloween” and carries her “candy ghost basket” around all the time. One of her favorite books is still the Corduroy Halloween Lift-the-Flap book. She is also on a BIG “Pat the Bunny” kick- and has to have it read to her many, many times- and especially right before bed.
On another note- Langley has walking pneumonia. She was at the doctor yesterday and he prescribed amoxicillin. He gave her the all clear to go to day care today- and she did sleep better last night than she has in several. Although she still sounds like an old man who has smoked way too many cigarettes in his life when she coughs. Poor Thing. But even when she is sick she is cute.

Last night we headed over to Dave and Annie's. They had the perfect neighborhood for Trick-or-Treat. Holly and Dave's dad were there also. The girls looked GREAT! And by the end they figured out the concept- although I am not sure they really know what candy is (they wanted to eat it with the wrapper- then lost interest in eating it- and played in it, which was much more fun for them.) They were all so good and pretty much wore their costumes with no fits, but don't you try to put Langley's which hat on her- Watch Out.

OK- I admit it- I am a fall junkie. I love it, pretty much everything about- and I love to be outside during it. I love the leaves changing color. Halloween is my favorite holiday. (I think you get the picture) So in keeping with that I made us go to an Enchanted Forest/Petting Zoo/Pumpkin Patch. I thought it might be the last time this season for a beautiful weekend day to go.
Langley enjoyed the petting zoo- but at this point she is much more of a looker and not a toucher. So there weren't so many pictures there. The enchanted forest had scenes from children's books and fairy tales. And we only did the pumpkin patch part because it was on the way out- but it was fun none-the-less. A good time was had by all.
So we went home a very tired, but happy crew.

So on Friday it was the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival. And we celebrated by getting together with one of the families we traveled with- Annie and Dave and their twins and my parents. We played some then got the girls dressed up and ate at a wonderful local Chinese place. Then we headed back to Annie and Dave's for Mooncakes and Champagne. A good time was had by all- especially the girls- Langley, Allie and Hannah. It was too bad it was raining so we really couldn't see the moon.

My mother was unhappy- nay, I say appalled- at the awful picture of Langley chowing down on the mooncake. "It doesn't even look like our baby." It is a bad picture- ahh but the best of a bad lot. So I am going to post a couple cute ones- and one with me (since I rarely do). Not much going on here in DC. Langley has learned to throw trash in the trash can. Yesterday, while doing laundry, Jamie said after they opened the dryer door she found a dryer sheet and walked over and put it in the trash. Which might not seem like much- but this was in the basement of our apartment complex, where she hasn't been in months, and still found the trash can.
Fore those of you wondering (and those who have asked) yes, she does have curly hair- and no we don't know "where she got it" .We have no idea if it will grow out or not. Even while we were in China people would come up to us and say "Curly Hair- So Rare."

In China its almost time for the Mid-Autumn Festival, this year I think its on October 8th. So I went and bought traditional Mooncakes (because this is the festival of the Moon Lady). Serioulsy who am I kidding like I need another reason to eat sweets- I mean if you know my family you know I was born with Cream Candy and Peanut Butter Fudge in my bottle.

Mooncakes are a sort of dense pastry with filling- the tradition flavors are Lotus, Mung Bean and 5 Flavor. They are beautiful- the top is so intricate- they are put into a mold before baking. These are great- different but really good. I had heard all these stories that they were too sweet (is there such a thing?) and awful. Oh how wrong they are- although I do have some more adventurous flavors for the actual event. Anyway Langley loves them too. Here are pictures of her half- and her eating. These are the 5 flavor kind. (I forgot to take pictures the first time she had it- so this is the second).

She did well, according to Jamie. We couldn't find the vaccination book so the Doctor had to figure out what shots to give her- and that took a while. During that time she got a bit fed up. Her head has shrunk according to the measurement- which Jamie said couldn't have been very accurate today- as she was very squirmy and kept pulling on the end of the measuring tape.
Now Jamie is sick- bad cold not what I had thank goodness, but still feels awful. Hopefully he can get some rest today. Anyway he is on his way home to give Langley some Tylenol for her shots and hopefully they can both take naps.

OK I discovered the first thing about being a Mom I really hate- Being sick. Me, not her. (I am sure I will hate it even more when she gets really sick too- not just the bad cold type- but since that hasn't happened yet this is the first thing I hate- that can be the second thing I hate). It’s not fun when it’s her- because while you do your best to sooth her and make her feel better- at least she understands that she feels bad (an like I said so far its only been a cold. When you are sick she has no concept of the fact that you feel bad. How could she-she 18 months old. She doesn't understand how while it is this wonderful surprise that Mommy didn't go to work today and stayed home with her and Daddy- she won't play- and most definitely let me sit on her tummy. (GI Bug or Food Poisoning- can't tell which- but am hoping for food poisoning because it’s not contagious).
Yesterday was awful (the night before really sucked- but at least Langley was asleep for the big fireworks). By the time she got up I was just exhausted and nauseous- and my stomach was so sore I couldn't stand up straight- which makes me think if I would have stuck with the crunches throwing up would not have made my muscles ache as much.
She is such a good girl and Jamie was wonderful- he kept her occupied the entire day, while I sipped Sprite and mostly slept.
Now I am just hoping they don’t catch it- because it was just wrong.

Labor Day Weekend

We had such a wonderful weekend. Langley and I went to Mawmaw and Papa’s in Kentucky. After getting off to a late start- the plane was delayed and we didn’t make it to Morehead until almost 2:00 a.m. on Saturday morning- we had a blast. We started out with a get together over at my Cousin Rhonda’s house and my Mom’s family was there. We ate and talked and Langley played with her cousins- generally having a great time- it was so great, in fact, that we needed to do it again the next day. This time up at Hattie Marie and Eddie’s. We spent the day 4-wheeling, mule riding and really having fun. Then on Monday we got to see Freida, Carolyn, Angie and Xandi (Langley’s “big sister” from China). Overall it was so much fun- they only downside was that Jamie had to stay in DC for a reading at the Kennedy Center and rehearsals for Deathtrap.

Those of you who know me well (really well) know that when I was little I was a VBS junkie. Yes- I admit it I was addicted to Vacation Bible School. I am from a small town- I can remember going to the Baptist, Methodist, Church with the Green Roof…bibles schools (and of course our church- when we had it). I loved them- especially craft time- popsicle stick boxes with crosses painted on the top, shrinky dink-esque suncatcher-windchimes, pillows…
Well Langley had her first VBS experience last week. The theme this year at our church was “Fiesta.” I was group leader to the “Rabbits.” Jamie did skits at the beginning as a stranded tourist. I think Langley really enjoyed it- as much as a 17 month old can. She was really scared the first night and tired the third- but the other two nights she had such a good time. She danced and played and tried to run to Daddy when he was onstage being “Entertainment.” It is too early to tell if she will end up a junkie like her mom- but she is off to an earlier start than me.

The first weekend in August we headed for the beach. We wanted Langley to have a beach trip her first summer here. Especially because she loves water so much. So the Whidden-Phillips clan headed over to Ocean City for a long weekend. Langley liked the beach- but she got very tired very fast- so she spent a lot of time napping. She really enjoyed sitting in the warm water when the tide was coming in and Papa making her a sand castle- she helped. The rest of us had a great time too. It was Jamie’s birthday so we had a great seafood dinner that night. The ocean was great. I want to go back!

At the end of July we took a trip to Columbus for Langley to meet the rest of Jamie’s side of the family. We had a great time. On Saturday Grandma, Uncle Mike, Great-Aunt Elizabeth, Uncle Todd, Aunt Nyla and Cousin Abbey came over to John, Julia and the girls’ place. We had lunch and dinner, and played outside- it was so much fun. (What did we do for entertainment before we had a child?) Langley got some great things- Books, her first Matchbox Car, A Princess Chair (and yes we did manage to get it in the suitcase and she loves to watch TV from it) and some other way cool things.
It was so good to see everyone- we really wish we lived closer. But we had a blast and we hope everyone else did too.

Daddy had to go out of town for a friend's wedding (Congratulations Suzanne and Rick!), so Mommy and I were together all weekend. And we had fun (mostly).
First on the way back from the airport we stopped at Arundel Mills- and I bought two outfits for next summer and a sleeper. I also bought a new pair of sandals from Stride Rite- my toes were hanging over the end of my old ones. Then I told Mommy that she needed an oil change- I told her she would get better gas mileage- with new oil and a new air filter. So we did that.
Later while we were chillen' watching TV Mommy got very upset when I took over the remote- I was only reprogramming it to what I wanted to watch. But after that she spent and hour instant messaging the comcast people to undo all my hard work. I did not think that was fair- so I threw down all the CDs I could find. But after my bath we were good.
Sunday morning was exciting too. The Power went out! The house got hot in 15 minutes- so we left for church over way early- and sat in the car before anyone showed up.
After church we went to brunch with Holly, and then we played at her house. She has two cats that I love- and Teletubbies On Demand. It was loads of fun.
And on Monday I went to work with Mommy at the SEC. I really helped her out. Her office was a mess- but I got things into shape. Thank goodness I am there to help!
Thank Goodness we picked Daddy up at the airport last night. I was getting tired of all this Mommy time.
