CACI & HR 1561-Childhood Adoption Act of 2005

I am not usually an activist- but oh adoption does things to you.

I submitted a 14 page proposal for adoption benefits back in January to my employer CACI. I didn't hear anything for months- but then- in the newsletter- there it was. They added adoption benefits. Not as much as I had asked for- but $2,500 reimbursement. I am so happy to make a difference. I will not go into the expense for adoption versus birth for people who have insurance- but this is a step in the right direction. I am so proud of my employer.

Also there is a bill to increase the adoption tax credit from 10K to 15K- I have written letters to my senators and house reps. It is below. If you feel so moved I urge you to cut and paste the letter (replacing my info with yours) and email your congress people. It really takes less than 5 minutes.

Dear Senator,

My name is Mary Whidden and I am a Maryland resident (go democrats). Please support HR 1561-Childhood Adoption Act of 2005. This will increase the dollar limitation on the tax credit for qualified adoption expenses. HR 347 will make the credit permanent and repeal the 5 yr limitation on carry forwards for unused credits. As a family currently adopting from China, I can say the expense that is incurred in the adoption process is very high, well over the tax credit. These changes will enable all American families to realize their dream of adding children to their family, without the hardship and debt that often accompany the adoption process.

Thank you!

Mary Whidden
